Here are some different ideas for where to use landscaping rocks, as well as some of the various options available to make your yard an oasis.

Landscaping with Stones:

There are endless ways to incorporate stones into your landscape design. Landscaping rocks are one of the most natural hardscaping elements you can work with, making your yard look fabulous in a simple yet natural way. Here are a few ideas where you could find yourself using landscaping rocks:

Driveways: Rocks can quickly turn a muddy, messy driveway into an elegant entrance. There are many different types of driveway stones to choose from, including gravel, crushed stone, and much more.

Walkways: Pathways leading to your outdoor living areas are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. While gravel is a common choice, larger stepping stones add a level of charm to your project.

Specialty Boulders: Larger rocks or boulders can serve as stunning focal points in your garden, water feature or other areas in the place of shrubs or trees. Eye-catching boulders can spruce up shady areas where plants refuse to thrive, and the best part is, they require no maintenance!

Rock Gardens: Flower beds aren’t just for flowers! Rocks and stones can be integrated into garden beds to compliment your plants with varying colours and textures.

Edging: Not only can the rocks and stones be featured inside your flower beds, but they can also be used to outline garden beds,  ponds & water features and other areas of your landscape, making it eye-catching to all that visit.

Retaining Walls: If you find yourself dealing with natural slopes in your yard, you may want to consider installing a retaining wall to prevent soil erosion while adding definition to your yard. Retaining walls can be used to build more functional garden planting areas and can even include built-in seating areas for you to sit back and enjoy your yard.

Rock Mulch: Replace regular mulch with river rock for a more elegant and polished look. These smooth, gently-rounded rocks can draw attention to your favourite plants and add colour to the shadier areas of your yard. Something to consider is you need to be careful with some of your more fragile plants.  While rock mulch shades the soil from the sun, it also carries more weight and heats up quicker, which can increase moisture loss.

Different Options for Landscaping Rocks:

After considering the different applications for landscaping rocks, the next step is to think of what materials you’d like to complete your space.  Here are some of the most popular kinds of landscaping rocks and what they’re best suited for:

Pea Gravel: This gravel consists of a mix of tiny, rounded stones that are available in a wide range of colours, which include tan, brown, grey and white. Although it’s called pea gravel for its pea-sized particles, the rocks are typically a mix of three sizes (¼ inch, ½ inch, and ⅝ inch). Pea gravel is another excellent, inexpensive option for pathways, driveways, and filling areas of your landscape.

Limestone: A durable sedimentary rock with a pleasant grey colour that fits in well in many landscape designs. It is available in gravel to slab forms and is for paths, walls, garden beds, accents, and more.

River Rock: These smooth rocks add a softer appearance to your landscape than other, sharper gravel varieties. River rocks are more massive than pea gravel, usually measuring about an inch or more in diameter. This material varies in colour and cost, so there are many to choose from, depending on the project.

Decorative Stone: These stones are substantial, flat rocks can are for a variety of landscaping projects. You can fit their irregular shapes together to create beautiful steps, pathways, patios, or stack them to build retaining walls. Choose from limestone, fieldstone, slate or Bella mountain rock.

Natural Rocks and Boulders: Use rocks of any size and shape to accent or edge your garden beds, adding unique colours and textures to your landscape. More massive boulders can function as a focal point, all on their own.
